Direct Pointing to the Human Mind by Zen Master Linji

Here are nine examples of direct pointing by Linji (Rinzai) in the Record of Linji (Linji Lu/Rinzai Roku) [all my translations]:

1) "Upon the ball of red flesh there is one true person without rank. It perpetually goes in and goes out of the gates of the faces of you people of various classes. To those who have not yet borne witness, look, look.”

2) “Drifters of the Way, the Dharma of the mind is without form and passes unobstructed through the ten directions. In the eyes it is called seeing. In the ears it is called hearing. In the nose--smelling fragrance. In the mouth--discussing and debating. In the hands--grasping and seizing. In the feet--running around. At the root it is the one essential brightness; divided, it is the six harmonious unions (of the senses). As the One Mind is already without anything, the place of accord is liberation. Why does this mountain monk give explanations and where is the meaning? Only for Drifters of the Way, all running about seeking the mind unable to rest, to surmount the different functions and forms of the barriers of the people of old."

[Note: The audience salutation 道流 daoliu is difficult to translate and has a double entendre. I’m translating it as “Drifters of the Way” which somewhat maintains the double entendre, while most translators use “Followers of the Way.” The term 道流 daoliu is literally “Way–stream,” “Way-flow,” “the steam of the Way,” or “the drift of the Way,” which, when used as a salutation to address the audience members, means "You Who Are in the Stream of the Way" and can be translated as "Way Streaming Ones," “Way Streamers” or “Way Flow-ers” or “Streamers or Floaters in the Way,” etc. ]

3) Drifters of the Way, exactly now, the solitary brightness before the eyes is the one who is listening through and through. This person in every place is not hindered and moves unobstructed through the ten directions and three realms on their own. On entering every situation, differentiations are not able to turn around or divert one. In the space of a single thought-instant (ksana) one thoroughly enters the Dharma Realm. Running into a Buddha, one articulates to the Buddha. Running into an ancestor, one articulates to the ancestor. Running into an arhat, one articulates to the arhat. Running into a hungry ghost, one articulates to the hungry ghost. Turning everywhere to ramble and tread on the lands of the country, one teaches and converts the many beings, yet has not once been separate from a single thought. Accordingly, the pure and clean light penetrates the ten directions, and the myriad things (dharmas) are One Suchness.

4) "Turn back the light on yourselves and look!"

5) "Drifters of the Way, as you long to attain the Dharma of Suchness, only do not give birth to doubts. By expanding, consequently it pervades the entire Dharma Realm (Dharmadhatu). By contraction, consequently a strand of hair cannot be set up. All the way through, the solitary brightness has never in the past lacked a little. The eye does not see it; the ear does not hear it. What object can be aroused? A man of old said, “To articulate that it appears like a single object consequently is not on the mark.” You should only look into your own home. What more is there? Articulating is likewise without exhaustion. Each personally touches strength. Seriously cherish it."

6) “Drifters of the Way , only know the ancient previous virtuous ones themselves in all cases had fundamental ways of producing people. Know that this mountain monk’s pointing is to instruct people on this feature: you only must not let yourself be deluded by people. If it’s necessary to act, then act, furthermore have no delay or doubt."

7) "As this poor mountain monk sees the point, nothing is not extremely profound, nothing is not liberation (moksha)." [Note: Yes, double negatives to attend to.]

8) Question, “’The Buddha of 'Great Thorough-knowing Surpassing in Awareness' [Mahābhijñā-Jñānābhibhu] sat for ten kalpas in a dojo (arena of the Way). The Buddha Dharma did not manifest before [him], and [he] was not able to accomplish the Buddha Way.’ I don’t discern the meaning of this, so what is it? I beg the master to point and instruct.”

The master said, “That which is ‘Great Penetration’ is his own self penetrating everywhere into the naturelessness and marklessness of the ten thousand dharmas and is named as ‘Great Through-knowing.’

That which is ’Surpassing in Awareness’ in all places is not to doubt and is not to attain a single thing (dharma) and is named as ‘Surpassing in Awareness.’

That which is ’Buddha’ is the mind’s clear purity shining bright to permeate throughout the Dharma Realm, and is able to be named as ‘Buddha.’"

9) Because the Master was entering the army camp to attend the vegetarian banquet, he was at the main gate and saw a staff officer. The Master pointed to the bare post and asked, “Is it ordinary or is it sacred?”

The staff officer was speechless.

The Master hit the bare post and said, “Even if you were able to say, still it is only a wooden stick. ”

Then he went and entered.

Was Nagarjuna distilling potatoes?

It appears to me that Nagarjuna distilled his version of "The Middle Way" teachings primarily from the family of Prajna Paramita Sutras, but also from other sutras.  However, in his distillery Nagarjuna was working with certain extractions and not others in order to come up with his liqueur of 100% essence of emptiness.  This was like taking potatoes and distilling vodka from them then saying that vodka is the essence or spirit of potatoes.  In a manner of speaking it is true, that emptiness can be distilled from the Buddha's Dharma of teaching and practice and called its "spirit", but by making too much of Nagarjuna's distilled emptiness teaching one can become intoxicated, if not habitually intoxicated,  in the way of drinking too much of the spirits of potatoes.

Understanding this problem is why it is important for the follower of the Buddha Dharma (i.e., a Buddhist) to read the Prajna Paramita Sutras for oneself, not to rely on Nagarjuna's distillation.  One of the most obtainable English translations of the Prajna Paramita Sutra in 25,000 lines is the translation by Edward Conze titled "The Large Sutra on Perfect Wisdom." In this Sutra, "emptiness" is virtually never mentioned by itself, but is virtually always discussed either with "signlessness and desirelessness" (the other two gates of the three gates of liberation and nirvana) or with Suchness.

For instance, in Conze's translation (pp. 530-531):

Subhuti: One speaks of 'enlightenment'. Of what is that a synonym?
The Lord: 'Enlightenment', that is a synonym of emptiness, of Suchness, of the Reality-limit, of the Dharma-element.  Moreover enlightenment is Suchness, nonfalsehood, unaltered Suchness, unaltered existence, therefore it is called 'enlightenment'. Moreover 'enlightenment'is a mere word and sign, therefore it is called 'enlightenment'. Moreover 'enlightenment' means an undifferentiated object.  Moreover because the Buddhas, the Lords have it, therefore is it called 'enlightenment'.  Moreover the Buddhas and Lords have fully known it, therefore it is called 'enlightenment'.

Notes on translations:
"Lord" = not a mundane ruler, but an epithet of the Buddha, bhagavat/bhagavan, "the Illustrious One" or "the World Honored One."
"Reality-limit: = bhutakoti, also "edge of relality," "the highest culminating point for all beings," etc.
"Dharma-element" = dharmadhatu, the essence of Dharma, the Dharma-stratum, the Dharma-sphere, the Dharma-realm, the Dharma-domain, the Dharma-field, etc. i.e., the totality of the universe when perceived as unconditioned by duality.
"Unaltered existence" = the conjunction ananyathabhava can be either unaltered existence ananyatha-bhava (bhava = existence) or unaltered non-existence ananyatha-abhava (abhava = nonexistence), can also be translated as "non-different-being-as-it-is".

So from this extract, we can easily see that distilling the Prajna Paramita view of enlightenment down to just "emptiness" is a rather arbitrary and capricious process.  Emptiness and Suchness are synonyms along with the Dharma-realm, the Reality-limit, nonfalsehood, non-different-being-as-it is, etc., i.e. the full potato.

Here's another instance (pp. 527-528):

Subhuti: For what reason has the knowledge of all modes no own-being?
The Lord:  It has no own-being acting in causal connection. And that which has no own-being acting in causal connection, that is nonexistence. It is by this method that all dharmas have nonexistence for own-being. Moreover, Subhuti, all dharmas have emptiness for own-being, the signless, the wishless.  Moreover, Subhuti, all dharmas have Suchness for own-being, the Reality limit, the Dharma element. By this method also, Subhuti, should one know that all dharmas have nonexistence for own-being.

Here we see emptiness conjoined as usual with signlessness and desirelessness making the three gates of liberation and Nirvana. So when Nagarjuna extracts emptiness from the triune Dharma food group, he is leaching out certain vitamins and nutrients of the teaching.  By not acknowledging on an equal basis that Suchness, with its Dharma food group of Reality limit and Dharma-realm, is as much a basis of own-being as emptiness, Nagarjuna again is presenting a framework for The Middle Way that is distorted, if not down-right perverted.

I admit that I have not studied Nagarjuna very much, and I am relying on how the Madhyamaka school has developed based on Nagarjuna's teachings.  If someone has experience with Nagarjuna studies and can let me know how Madhyamaka has not followed Nagarjuna and has misrepresented Nagarjuna, then I would be most appreciative and change my view accordingly.

For now I will say, "Eat the potatoes; don't rely on the vodka for sustenance."

It's a One Vehicle Day

~
I have finished the first draft of my English translation of Guṇabhadra's Chinese translation of

THE SUTRA OF

QUEEN ŚRĪMĀLĀ’S LION’S ROAR

Wherein Is Articulated The Severance Of All Doubts, The Certainty Of The Complete Meaning, And
The Entrance To The Way Of The One Vehicle

I've written the following dedication for the translation.

Dedication Of The Lion’s Roar

The Lion’s Roar of the Tathagata pervades the whole universe,
resounding right here – now.
We give thanks to The World Honored One,
To Queen Srimala,
to all the generations and ancestors
of the lineage of the One Vehicle, and
to all the True Children of the Tathagata
for protecting and handing down this Lion’s Roar.
We sincerely and humbly dedicate the meritorious-virtue
arising from receiving, maintaining, reading, and reciting
this Lion’s Roar
to all beings everywhere,
so that they may Accept the Real Dharma
and directly and personally be able to hear and proclaim this Lion’s Roar.
*
All Buddhas throughout space and time,
All Awakened Beings, Great Beings,
The Perfect and Complete One Vehicle.

Separately, I composed the following verse in praise of the One Vehicle.

Ode to the One Vehicle

Wanderers in the Way,
Hear the One Vehicle  (Ekayana) of the Tathagata’s lion’s roar.
Everyone of the multitude of beings in every case has Buddha Nature
And without exception are led to enter the Way of the One Vehicle.

That One Vehicle
Always abides in the Dharma realm,
Always silent and always illuminating.

The immeasurable and innumerable expedient methods of the Buddha Dharma,
Indeed in every case, are for the reason of the One Buddha Vehicle.
Directly pointing to one’s own mind immediately reveals true nature,
And opens the knowing and seeing of the Buddha.

Great master Bodhidharma transmitted the lineage of the One Vehicle of Southern India
Without self and without other,
With the worldly and the sacred one and the same,
Only the Bodhidharma lineage transmits the inheritance by means of mind.
The mind is the fountainhead of the Dharma.

Grreat Master Huineng instructed to use establishing no thought as the lineage.
Those who see the essence of no thought see the lineage,
Then thought after thought in every case is the One Buddha Vehicle.
If that mind is entirely extinguished,
There is no vehicle as well as someone in the vehicle.

If you want to choose the One Vehicle,
do not hate the six dusts.
All things are completely the evidentiary things of the One Mind.
The One Mind is completely the One Mind of all things.
All things completely then are True Mind.
By flowing unobstructed, consequently all things are wonderful medicine.

The true mind of root enlightenment is like the brightness of the mirror.
There are no appearances that can be obtained.
Therefore all things are like appearances in the mirror.
The essence of the one true heart-mind
Is indeed one’s own essence of true suchness.

That which is Dharma knows one’s own nature.
That which is Dharma knows the real truth.
That which is Dharma knows the One Vehicle.
In every case consider the Dharma of the One Vehicle as the real truth

The deep necessarily includes the shallow;
the shallow does not reach the deep.
Likewise, the One Vehicle necessarily includes the various vehicles;
While the various vehicles do not reach the One Vehicle
Because the various vehicles immediately are the One Vehicle,
Those who gain the One Vehicle
Gain the unexcelled unified equality-enlightenment (anuttara-samyak-sabodhi),
Always abiding in the Dharma-realm,
Able to touch and yet immediately to pass through.
